Projet Description
Gooseday is an eco-festival me co-hosted with Felix Lipp from the Student Union Sustainability Committee at CalArts. This project is also second project of my graduation thesis. This event included a series of interactive and educational activities designed to engage students and faculty in discussions and actions towards a more sustainable future. With the beloved campus geese as mascots, the festival featured workshops, pop-ups, and a film screening, all aimed at promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices within the CalArts community.
Event Promotion
The event promotion design included posters, Instagram posts, installations, and interactive elements like Gooseday stickers.
↑The posters were designed with a laid-back and humorous style, distinct from the usual crafted posters on campus. To spark curiosity and increase attendance, we kept the event details on the posters mysterious, which proved effective as many students approached us to learn more. For comprehensive information, I also designed a detailed poster that outlined all the activities planned for Gooseday.
↑We also made a a photo spot for people to take pictures with. The Egg installation is originally made by Eugenia for her performance art.
↑We focused on making Gooseday as sustainable as possible. Not only did we use recycled materials like cardboard boxes for making geese figures, but also reused over 200 expired posters from campus hallways, printing on their backs to minimize waste.
Event
↑The "Sort & Support" pop-up was an engaging event designed to educate the CalArts community on proper waste sorting. Participants took part in a hands-on activity, learning how to correctly sort waste materials and earning reusable utensils as a reward. This pop-up, part of the larger Gooseday Festival, aimed to make sustainability practices more accessible and fun on campus.

↑In our second event.we hosted a film screening for ‘Climate Refuge,’ focusing on the pressing issues of climate change and migration. This documentary, produced by our event sponsor Justin Hogan, has the unique distinction of being the first documentary film to be included in a time capsule on the lunar surface.Despite our worries, the event saw a turnout of 11 attendees, with three staying through to the very end.
↑ The ‘Meditation’ workshop, led by Eugenia, shady spot on campus for a deeper connection with nature.Participants engaged in guided meditation, focusing on the sensory experiences of wind and grass, while Eugenia discussed the local natural environment. We provided free tea and vegan cookies, enhancing the overall meditative experience.
↑ The ‘Native Plant Seed Bomb’ workshop was planned to engage participants in making seed bombs and supporting native wildlife. However, it took an unexpected turn due to the lack of attendees besides myself, Felix, and Shannon. Instead of creating seed bombs, we utilized the time to contribute directly to the campus ecosystem by burying seven bags of black sage seeds near irrigation areas.
↑ Our last pop-up event, 'Free Food?' brought an engaging twist to environmental education at Steve's Cafe. We roamed between tables with cardboard geese, inviting people to participate in this game. The game was a modified version of Jeopardy, where participants answered various questions, from waste sorting tips to the size and impact of the Pacific Garbage Patch. Each table competed internally, with participants vying to provide the best and most correct answers.
The winner at each table was rewarded with a bag of vegan cookies.
↑ The 'Herbography Workshop' was designed to blend art with botany, where participants would use a plant identification app to explore and learn about various plant species on campus. Each participant was to find different plant species and create a small art piece.
↑ In the ‘Waddling with Felix’ workshop, participants embarked on a sensory walk from Tatum’s/Chouinard to Hippie Hill, exploring our campus environment barefoot. We traversed various place—grass, mulch, rocks, and concrete, finishing with a swampy mix of water and soil.
This journey provided insights into how different grounds would feel to a goose. The walk concluded with a discussion on the diversity of insects encountered and their environmental challenges. This aimed to increase awareness of our environmental impacts.
